2019 Grand National Review and Results

Anyone that watched the 2019 Grand National witnessed a huge bit of horse racing history as the Gordon Elliott-trained TIGER ROLL defended his crown to win the world’s greatest steeplechase for the second year in a row.

They say good things come in small packages and this is certainly true with the pint-sized Tiger Roll. The 2018 Aintree Grand National hero was backed as if defeat was out of the question and was eventually sent off as one of the shortest-priced Grand National favourites in the last 100 years.

Grand National 2019 Betting Results

He returned at Grand National betting odds of 4/1 and with punters latching onto this up-and-coming hero in their droves, it’s reported that Tiger Roll’s second National win cost the bookmaking industry upwards of £250 million!

He also etched his place in the Grand National ‘Hall-of-Fame’ as becoming the first horse since Red Rum (1974) to win ‘back-to-back’ Nationals and if he lines-up again in the 2021 Grand National (given the 2020 Grand National was cancelled due to public health and safety protocol), he’ll be looking to become only the second horse to win the race three times, but the first to win the Grand National three-times-in-a-row!

His win also meant that owners – Gigginstown House Stud – were winning the race for the third time in four years, while Tiger Roll’s win also provided jockey Davey Russell with his second National win and trainer, Gordon Elliott, with this third – having also trained Silver Birch in 2007.

Since the Grand National was first run in 1839, only a handful of horses have ever won the Aintree Grand National more than once, but Tiger Roll is now in that club.

Tiger Roll also became the first winning Grand National favourite since Don’t Push It in 2010 and the shortest-priced Grand National winner since 1919!

His target next season in 2019-20 was again the Cross-Country race at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival where he came second – a prize he’s also won in 2019 and 2018, and then we’ll have to see if connections bring him back to Aintree to try and defend his title again………let’s hope they do!

Grand National 2019 Results

The 2019 Grand National saw a massive 19 of the 40 runners complete the race, but the race was marred by the fatal injury to Up For Review, who was brought down at the first fence.

The 2018 Grand National runner-up – Pleasant Company – was still in with a chance until unseating at the 27th fence. Magic Of Light, who went off at 66/1, ran a blinder to be second in the race for trainer Jessie Harrington, while Ruby Walsh steered home the Willie Mullins-trained Rathvinden to take fourth. That made it an Irish 1-2-3 in the 2019 Grand National, with Walk In The Mill coming out best of the home-based trained horses for the Robert Walford yard.

Gold Cup runner-up, Anibale Fly, who was also fourth in the 2018 Grand National, filled fifth, with the 2017 winner – One For Arthur – running a respectable sixth.
