Cheltenham Ryanair Chase – What you need to know
The Ryanair Chase is the feature race on day three of the Cheltenham Festival. It is a grade 1 contest for horses aged 5 years and over. Here’s some key facts to get you up to speed on the Ryanair Chase.
How long is the Ryanair Chase, when’s it held and where’s it run?
The Ryanair is one of the most recent additions to the Cheltenham Festival, brought in for 2005 when the event was extended to stretch over four days, and upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2008. The Ryanair is the most valuable race on day three, with the winner receiving in excess of £200,000 and it is scheduled to be run at 2.50pm on Thursday 14th March 2024.
The Ryanair Chase is run over 2 miles 4½ furlongs, making it longer than both the Champion Hurdle and Champion Chase, but nearly two miles shorter than the Grand National. Despite the different distances, Conflated and Capodanno have been entered in both the Ryanair and the Grand National for 2024.

Two-time Ryanair Chase winner Allaho will not be taking part in this race in 2024. This has left us with a very open race where many involved will feel like they could win on the day. Here is a little bit more information on current favourite Banbridge, as well as some detail on their current closest rival Envoi Allen.
Banbridge
Banbridge goes into Cheltenham on fine form and he has won his last two races. This included a 1st place finish in the Manifesto Novices’ Chase at the Grand National in Aintree. The horse knows how to perform on the big occasion and trainer Joseph Patrick O’Brien will be hoping that Banbridge can win in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham.
Envoi Allen
Envoi Allen hasn’t raced since November 2023; however, the popular horse was the winner of the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham last year. Jockey Rachael Blackmore has 48 wins this season and will be hoping Envoi Allen can make it back-to-back wins in this race.
Stage Star
Since January 2023, Stage Star has raced six times and he has finished 1st in 4 of these races. One was at Cheltenham in November. His other two races were not so good, with Stage Star pulling up at Cheltenham in January 2024 and claiming last place as he finished 5th in the Manifesto Novices’ Chase at the Grand National.
Conflated
There may be a slight worry for trainer Gordon Elliott as Conflated has unseated their jockey in their last 2 races. The hope for Conflated will be to finish the race with no issues. A 3rd place finish in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last year does give Elliott some hope that Conflated can compete on the big stage.
Capodanno
Capodanno has been very inconsistent in his last 5 races. He pulled up at Aintree in April 2023 and finished last at Thurles in November 2023. Despite this, he has hit good form at the right time. Capodanno finished 3rd in December and then finished 1st at Cheltenham in January.
Fil Dor
Fil Dor has finished second in their last two races. This will no doubt give trainer Gordon Elliott some hope that the 6 year old horse could race well in the Ryanair Chase. This consistent form is exactly what is needed ahead of Cheltenham.

Cheltenham Ryanair Chase betting trends
We all want to get an edge when placing our bets, and one way to do so is by looking at the make-up of past race winners. Here we’ve focused on the last 11 Ryanair Chase winners to see which trends are worth following.
Key Cheltenham Ryanair Chase betting trends
- 11/11 – Had previously run at the Cheltenham Festival
- 10/11 – Had previously won at least five races
- 8/11 – Won at odds of 5/1 or shorter
- 7/11 – Had raced within the last 8 weeks
- 6/11 – Aged exactly 7 years old
- 5/11 – Had won their most recent race
- 5/11 – Won by the favourite
- 5/11 – Trained by Willie Mullins
- 5/11 – Had previously won at the Cheltenham Festival
- 3/11 – Aged 9 years old or older
- 2/11 – Aged exactly 8 years old
It’s clear to see that having previous experience of running at the Cheltenham Festival is crucial. Actually winning there before is of less importance, although Envoi Allen had ticked that box when victorious in 2023.
How to watch and stream the Ryanair Chase
Once you’ve placed your Ryanair Chase bets, you’ll undoubtedly want to find somewhere to watch the drama unfold. ITV is one place to view the action, although the Festival’s later races aren’t included in the coverage. We’d therefore suggest bookmakers’ sites as a handy alternative. Many now provide a free streaming service to their customers, including the possibility of placing bets and cashing out mid-race, so it’s well worth having your login details to hand when the Ryanair Chase gets underway.
